Two Mexican Red Cross paramedics were murdered by armed gunmen in Ixtapaluca while carrying out their humanitarian duties. 


Six aid workers from the Nigerian Red Cross and numerous civilians were killed following an airstrike on a refugee camp in Rann, Borno state. The aid workers were in Rann as part of a humanitarian relief operation that was bringing food to over 25,000 displaced people. A number of aid workers were also wounded in the attack and eight had to be airlifted out of the town for medical assistance. 


Two UN staff members were injured during a complex attack by Al-Shabaab on Hotel Dayah, which was popular with government officials and politicians. A car with explosives was first used to breach the gate of the hotel, followed by a raid on the hotel and then a secondary blast. Reportedly, 28 people died in the attack and 43 were wounded.

Four trucks contracted by an INGO were attacked by gunmen on their way to Mayom in the morning. The driver was killed and two others were wounded and required medical attention at a clinic in Bentiu. An INGO contracted driver was kidnapped in the Ajira area in Kajo Keji. Approximately eight men approached the vehicle when it was stopped due to a flat tire. It was a private vehicle but clearly marked with the INGO's flag. Other staff members were in the vehicle as well during the attack but they were released in the Bori area with their valuables intact. The vehicle and the driver were still missing when this was reported and their whereabouts were not able to be confirmed upon verification a year later. 


Six ICRC staff workers of Aghan nationality have been shot and killed by gunmen in the northern province of Jawzjan. Two more staff members were abducted. The attack on the convoy occurred south of Shibergan while the aid workers were transporting relief supplies to areas affected by the recent snowstorm. The abducted aid workers were released around the 5th of September, 2017.

A staff member of an NGO was critically injured during an air strike on her home in Mokha, Yemen. Several of her family members (not counted here) were killed in the attack. 


A contracted truck for a UN agency was driving between Diffra and Gola when an armed man attempted to block the road. The driver was able to speed up and avoid the ambush but the perpetrator shot off two rounds, hitting the passenger and killing him and wounding the driver in the thigh. The driver was taken to a UN medical center for treatment. The contracted team was on-duty at the time of the attack. 


Three national aid workers for an INGO were reportedly abducted by suspected Al-Shabaab gunmen at Hajub, near Beledweyne. They were providing humanitarian assistance to drought-affected beneficiaries at the time of the attack. They were all released within a week.

One volunteer died while performing humanitarian activities in Al-Waer, Homs. Reportedly, the team he was working with in the field was targeted by aerial artillery fire and he died while rescuing civilians in the area.

Eight INGO national aid workers were kidnapped by armed rebels near Mayendit, South Sudan. Reports give different accounts of the incident. Most recent reports say that the aid workers were kidnapped in order to pressure the organization for aid deliveries to specific areas but in a statement, the organization said that this wasn't the case. The aid workers were released after two days.

One UN contracted off-duty guard was abducted by a KIA battalion that forcibly tried to recruit him into their army. This occurred in the Hparew village which is 16 kilometers west of Mytikyina. UNDSS and the local KLA liaison officer were involved in securing his release, which occurred on April 1st, 2017.

An NGO vehicle drove over an IED in Saifal Darra in Orakzai Agency which exploded and wounded three aid workers. Although the wounds were not life threatening, two female staff members required medical attention. The aid workers were not the target of the attack, the IED had been intended for security forces in the area.  


Five aid workers and two contracted drivers were detained in Ibb by rebel forces that raided the hotel that the aid workers were in. They were all released on April 3rd but it is unknown how long they were held.

According to a media report, one national staff member from the Haitian Red Cross (HRC) was shot by armed perpetrators. A group of HRC members were in their vehicle, steps away from the chapter, when armed gunmen started shooting at them at point-blank range. The motive for the attack is unknown.

In Mosul, one national staff member was shot in the leg by a stray round.

One national volunteer for the Red Crescent was killed due to fighting in Gosalak village in Kunar province. The circumstances of his death remain unknown.


One German international aid worker was killed in an INGO guest house after armed attackers ambushed the building. A Finnish aid worker was also kidnapped by the group. In addition, the attackers beheaded a guard at the compound. Details surrounding the incident and the attackers are currently unavailable. On September 14th, the Finnish government confirmed that the aid worker was released after being held captive for 118 days. In a statement, the foreign minister said that they did not pay a ransom for the release of the aid worker. 


A VBIED exploded in the diplomatic quarter, close to Kabul's Zanbaq square. One INGO national staff member was slightly injured in the attack by shrapnel.

This was an unprovoked assault resulting from a spillover of violence from an earlier incident on a motorbike rider who was assigned to an INGO local staff member. The community youth had earlier accused the motorbike rider of assaulting an adolescent who threw an object at the motorbike. They tried to attack the motorbike rider, but he received protection in a police station. The youths decided to attack the INGO local staff member instead.


One Kenyan aid worker was killed when their vehicle hit a landmine not far from Dadaab refugee camp in eastern Garissa. It is reported that the mine was likely planted by Al-Shabaab.

An unknown number of men assaulted the aid worker and took his money. The staff member received medical attention at the prefecture hospital.

The organization did not mention who was responsible for the kidnapping, however, a number of militias are active in that region. Both aid workers were released on June 15th.


One UN agency and one NGO staff member that were working together on a monitoring mission were abducted by the local Taliban group. They were taken and held in Andar district in Ghazni province. They were interviewed by the provincial council and then one of the staff members was brought back to Waghaz and released on June 17th. The other had escaped earlier that day.

A humanitarian convoy composed of multiple agencies was fired upon by a non-state armed group close to a military checkpoint on its way back to Damascus city. As a direct result of this incident, one of the drivers lost control of his vehicle and hit another truck. The driver was injured and evacuated to a hospital in order to receive treatment.

A staff member of the Syrian Red Crescent was injured in an attack on a humanitarian convoy near the Syrian capital of Damascus. The convoy was targeted when it approached the city and the staff member was shot and seriously wounded.  The truck was part of a multi-agency convoy tasked with the mission to deliver food, medicine and supplies to 11,000 people in the town of East Harasta.


One NGO truck carrying food commodities was heading to Gamboru when the vehicle broke down. The driver left to arrange alternative means of transportation, leaving his assistant driver in the truck. Boko Haram insurgents came and looted the provisions and set the vehicle on fire. The assistance driver was abducted and he has not been recovered. 


One aid worker was killed during a complex terrorist attack on a popular tourist retreat in Yirimandio. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb later claimed responsibility for the attack. Gunmen killed five people in the attack. Four of the assailants were killed as well and four others were arrested. According to reports, thirty-two guests were rescued.

A number of staff members from an assessment team (and a local partner to an INGO) were parked outside of a school in the Surkroad district of Nangarhar province. An AOG fired at them, killing one of the national staff members and seriously injuring another. According to a report, there was a change of command within the AOG, which could have contributed to the attack occurring. 


One UN national staff member, on leave from work at the time, was shot dead at his home in Quetta by a 9mm handgun. A security guard watching the premises was also killed. Both were shot multiple times.

On July 14th, six to ten armed men broke into an INGO's compound, injuring two staff members and threatening others. According to a report, the organization partially withdrew its team after the violent attack while they were re-evaluating the security situation. Computers, phones and other office equipment were stolen. 


One UN driver was abducted north of Dahwali, Afghanistan, in AGE controlled territory. He was released three days later on July 16th after the intervention of local elders.

During a complex attack in Amiriyat la-Fallujah by ISIS fighters, a BBIED denoted inside a police station. A UN agency contracted truck driver, who was parked in front of the organization's warehouse, which is in the vicinity of the police station, was shot in the leg when police started firing. 


One INGO contracted guard was stabbed when he didn't let visitors enter the hospital outside of visiting hours. They were armed with Jambias.

They died from gunshot wounds to the head and some media reports state that the perpetrators used silencers on their firearms. Three national aid workers for an INGO were gunned down and killed in Ghor province, somewhere near the capital city of Chaghcharan. Two others (not currently counted in the AWSD because the information could not be verified) were reportedly wounded in the event. Although the motive and perpetrators of this incident are also unknown, the area reportedly has an active Taliban and ISIS presence. 


One national staff member of an INGO was shot and killed during a personal dispute in Nanghar.

An assailant attempted to murder a guard on the organization's compound in Bambari. He was stabbed in the back four times by one assailant. He was taken to the hospital and although he was seriously injured, he survived the attack. The South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) discovered the body of an NGO driver when they responded to the sounds of gunfire in Torit, near the UNMISS base. It is unknown whether the incident is related and a police investigation was underway during the time that this incident was reported. The NGO driver had been shot. 


A UN vehicle en route from the airport to the city center was targeted by small arms fire from another vehicle. One international staff member was wounded in the arm and the chest. The driver was injured in the chest. Both were transferred to the hospital with serious injuries.


One male INGO staffer was killed in his hotel room in the Mopti region of central Mali. His personal items were missing from the hotel room where he was found. The perpetrators of the attack are currently unknown.


 Two armed attackers forcefully entered the office of a national NGO and killed its founder. The two suspects escaped after the attack. The police believe that the killing may have been as a result of a personal dispute and not to do with the man's status as an aid worker.

One international staff member of the ICRC working in Mazar-i-Sharif, was shot and killed at the organization's rehabilitation center where she treated disabled men, women, and children. She was taken to a NATO medical facility where she succumbed to her wounds. According to early reports, the shooter was someone that she treated.


Four members of a UN agency were seriously assaulted by soldiers that had entered their residential compound in Monguno. The soldiers were making their rounds to enforce curfew when the attack occurred, reportedly because the soldiers found that some contracted staff were in violation of the regulations. They forced the staff inside and proceeded to make their way through the house, waking other staff up and assaulting or threatening them. Three contracted drivers and one staff member were physically hurt in the attack. 


A contracted truck driver transporting UN commodities was shot by suspected Bobo-Haram fighters along the Dikwa-Maiduguri road. Despite the injury, he managed to drive to Dikwa. 


On September 15th, one UN national staff member and a driver were ambushed by armed robbers between Akure and Ibadan, resulting in the death of the driver and the kidnapping of the female staff member. She was released on September 18th, 2017.

One female international aid worker was abducted from her home in El-Fasher in North Darfur by armed gunmen. Some reports say that a ransom was demanded for her release, although those reports currently cannot be corroborated. Neither can reports that allege that she was abducted by pro-government factions in protest to not having received their salaries. Some reports also state that she was working for a Swiss INGO which provides aid to children. United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Ms. Marta Ruedas, made a statement in regards to this incident calling for the release of the aid worker.  Update: She was released on November, 15th, 2018. Reportedly, no ransom was paid by the host government or home government. Two members of the kidnapping team were arrested. It is possible that she ran her own charity although this has not been verified at this time.


A UN national staff member was sitting in a park with some friends when he was attacked by three perpetrators in Islamabad that ran away after the attack. The staff member suffered multiple fractures on his left arm and required medical attention for his injuries. The reason for the attack is unknown and the attack is under investigation.

Five aid workers from that Somali Red Crescent died after a massive truck bomb exploded in Mogadishu, followed by another, smaller, bomb. Although no credit has been taken for the attack, Al-Shabaab is widely reported as being the only group with the means to execute such an attack. Boko Haram fighters raided the north-eastern town of Rann, home to a camp housing 55,000 internally displaced persons. Armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades the insurgent group attacked the military post guarding the camp. Initial reports state that 3 aid workers contracted by the UN (from two different agencies), all Nigerian nationals, were killed in the attack. One nurse, a third party contractor to a UN agency, was kidnapped. Two midwives, both female aid workers and supported by an INGO, were also kidnapped by the militant group. Although her duty station was in Baidoa town, she was off-duty in Mogadishu buying items for her upcoming wedding, according to a statement made by a family member. 


 A female international staff member working for the ICRC was kidnapped from inside the organization's compound by armed men in Mogadishu on Wednesday evening. Local security authorities have called this an inside job and are investigating whether this incident involved a local private security firm that was staffing the compound. At least one guard is suspected of participating in the kidnapping. Information about any of the perpetrators cannot be confirmed at this time. The motive for the kidnapping is unknown and concern for the aid worker's safety have been expressed. Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab operates in Somalia and is active in Mogadishu.

Reportedly, as many as thirty people were wounded and no group has taken responsibility for the attack.  The attack apparently took place during a meeting with NGOs working on refugee issues.

Seven UN local implementing partners were abducted in North Kivu on August 2nd, 2018. The convoy of two vehicles was stopped by armed assailants East of Masisi center. The Congolese nationals were kidnapped but the two drivers and their vehicles were released. On August 3rd, two of the seven staff members were released after being seriously assaulted. They were treated for their wounds in Masisi. Reportedly a ransom has been requested for the remaining staff members.


Armed men reportedly abducted Somali Red Crescent staff members near Baidoa town on August 9th. The staff members were on a mission to provide aid to drought-affected beneficiaries when they were abducted from the camp at gunpoint during a food distribution operation. It's unclear who kidnapped the staff members but militants have previously carried out attacks in the region. The staff members were released on 23rd August 2018.

The team was traveling Masalani to Ijara to conduct assessments on projects that they were implementing in the towns. The shots came from the bush. In total 13 UN staff members were caught amongst a mob inside the Bidi Bidi Refugee settlement. 5 staff members were able to escape, and 3 were injured by crude weapons and required medical attention. Vehicles were also damaged during the mob violence. 


One guard was seriously assualted at a Nduta camp by a group of individuals that ran away after the attack. The staff member had to be hospitalized for several days. The motive for the attack is not known.


One female NGO employee working on a Polio program was shot and killed by unknown perpetrators.
