Two INGO workers (Italian and British) were abducted by ISIS in northern Syria, close to the Turkish border. UPDATE: The Italian staff member was released over a year later, on 26 May 2014.  The British staff member was tortured and killed on 13 September 2014.

Two UN-contracted drivers were abducted by unknown armed groups, who robbed the drivers of their personal belongings and stole the contents of the trucks' cargo. It appears that the owner of the trucks paid a ransom and that the drivers were released.

Six ICRC staff and one Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteer were abducted by gunmen who had opened fire on the Red Cross convoy as they were traveling to Damascus.  Three ICRC staff and the one Red Crescent volunteer were released the next day.  The ICRC is awaiting information on the remaining three. Reports from ICRC in April 2019 indicate the remaining international staff member and two national staff members may still be alive, although specific information about their whereabouts is unknown.

Five international staffers of an INGO (Belgian, Danish, Peruvian, Swedish, and Swiss) were forcibly taken from the organization's residence in Northern Syria 'for questioning,' and have been out of contact since 2 January.  As a result, the organization closed some of its medical facilities in the area.  UPDATE: Three were released on 4 April and the remaining two on 14 May 2014.

He was seen once during his capture on a Russian language youtube video denouncing the organization. He is still missing and his whereabouts are unknown.

One INGO national staff member was abducted and held for ransom in Izra, Syria. Assailants physically assaulted the aid worker badly in captivity. The crime was economically motivated (and potentially premeditated due to certain circumstances that would make the aid worker a valuable target). Released after three days, the staff member required medical treatment for their wounds.
